Dear Fellow Cal Alum,

As a Cal grad and member of the 2004 and 2008 U.S. Olympic teams, I’m incredibly proud of Berkeley’s Olympic achievements. At the last Summer Games, Berkeley’s 34 athletes took home 15 medals. That means, if Cal were its own country, we’d have ranked 18th in the medal count ahead of 59 nations! With upwards of 60 former and current student athletes vying for spots to represent their countries, the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China, promise to be just as exciting for Cal alumni and fans around the world.

As you watch the 2008 Games and root for your fellow Bears, I encourage you to consider making a gift to support the student athletes who embody Berkeley’s excellence — on the playing field and in the classroom.

After an injury in 1999, my swimming career was nearly finished. The support I received at Berkeley from teammates, professors, and my incredible coach, Teri McKeever, helped me heal and rekindled my passion for swimming. Their encouragement made it possible for me to win Olympic gold while earning a degree from one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Cal's 27 sports programs rely entirely on private support, including contributions from alumni and fans just like you. Please make a gift today. You may support Bear Backers Grants-In-Aid, which provides scholarships for hundreds of deserving student athletes. Or, make a gift to our nationally recognized Athletic Study Center, which provides more than 900 student athletes with academic counseling, tutoring, and advising each year.

Your support of Cal Athletics can help make another student’s Olympic dream come true.

Thank you for your consideration, and Go Bears!
